May is the official month of NZ Music. Radio stations here play more NZ Music, there are a million billion gigs going on, some bands are whinging, some bands are cringing, and some bands are just happy that we get our very own month of specialness. Mothers and Fathers might get a day, the blind and deaf get an awareness week, but we get a whole month. Of course we’re almost outdone by various animals of the Chinese zodiac who get a year to themselves every 12 years, but a month per year is still pretty good going.
May is the month named after both Brian May of Queen and Bill May of Maton guitars. So it is only appropriate that a Music Month should fall on May.
Transit of Venus have a gig in May. It’s our EP release Party, and we’ll be showing off our brand new video for the first time, directed by my personal hero Simon Raby. Check out this other video (Click through if you can’t see it on your feed) of Simon’s synth pop thing happening in 1981, a couple of years before I was born! Anyway, he’ll probably be annoyed at me for posting it but I just really like it and wanted to share a little piece of NZ Music History.
Anyway, our gig, it’s on May 14th at The Dogs Bollix 2 Newton rd Auckland NZ. Will be a fun show. I’m really really looking forward to it. I have some footage from the last show but haven’t managed to rip it off DVD and put it on youtube because I’m a wee bit technologically disadvantaged at times.
In other news, I just read the Erik has put out a new version of Derelict (a game I did some music for) that needs bug testing. More details here.
And in other other news… It was Amanda Palmers Birthday yesterday, and she politely requested that for her birthday she would like her music to introduced to people who haven’t heard it before. I don’t know if you have heard it or not but here is my current favorite Amanda Palmer song for you. She’s not a NZ Musician, but I think she should be an honorary one today just because she rocks so much.
Anyway, thats about it from me today. I’m off to work on final final details of EP cover art. Enjoy NZ Music Month, get to a gig, buy a CD, hug a musician etc.
Over and out
